Minimum requirements to be an Uber driver

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 23 years old)
  • Have a valid US driver’s license
  • Use an eligible 4-door vehicle

Required documents in the application process

  • A valid Social Security card
  • Proof of residency in your city, state, or province (e.g., passport, current utility bill)
  • Proof of vehicle in-state car registration. The vehicle registration can be in someone else’s name.
  • Proof of vehicle in-state car insurance in your name if you plan to drive your car (as opposed to renting a car through Uber)
  • A profile photo
    • The photo must be a forward-facing, centered photo with no sunglasses, including the driver’s entire face and top of shoulders.

Online Screening/background check to drive for Uber

To pass the Uber online screening

  • Applicants cannot have more than three minor moving violations in the past three years, such as speeding tickets or failure to obey traffic laws.
  • Applicants cannot be convicted of a felony, violent crime, or sexual offense within the last seven years.

Vehicle requirements for Uber drivers

While many drivers have their vehicles, you can apply to become an Uber driver without one. Begin the application and select the ‘I need a car’ option. How to pass an Uber vehicle inspection

  • This can be completed at an Uber activation center or any state-licensed auto repair shop in your area. (If you already have a valid/non-expired inspection sticker, you can bypass this step)
  • Uber will conduct the inspection for free at their centers. If you choose to see your mechanic, you are responsible for paying for the service charges (depending on where you go)
  • The Uber vehicle inspection checks your car’s safety and mechanical features, including the condition of your seat belts, lights, brakes, and tires.

Vehicle registration and insurance requirements

The vehicle you plan to use for Uber must have license plates that match the state you intend to drive in and up-to-date registration tags. If your city lies on the border of another state, your vehicle may be eligible for an exception.

  • UberSUV— To qualify as a UberSUV driver, you must have a luxury SUV like a Cadillac Escalade Platinum or a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. You will also need a commercial driving license and insurance to maintain a high Uber driver rating.
  • UberBLACK— If you have a black luxury car, a high Uber driver rating, and a commercial driving license and insurance, UberBLACK is for you. Some cities require UberBLACK drivers to have airport permits.
